There are so many people who avoid going to the dentist at all cost, children and adults alike. Which is why IV sedation for dentistry has become so popular. But, if not done with specific precautions in place, it can have negative effects.
For instance, Henry Patel, a well respected cardiologist, went in for a routine dental procedure, where he was placed under anesthesia.
“I never thought I would go into a dental office and come back a widow. Who has to do that at age 47? But I would never even see him speak or open his eyes again,” Henry’s wife, Shital Patel told WECT 6 News, through tears.
The news article, After dental patient dies following routine procedure, widow calls for changes to anesthesia requirements, goes on to say.
When patients are put under anesthesia for medical procedures, an anesthesiologist or Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) must be present in case something goes wrong. However, that safeguard is not in place for dentists and oral surgeons,
“Nobody should have to go through what we are going through, and what the other families are going through because it’s preventable,” Shital told WECT.
“If you are going to do deep sedation, and we are not saying you shouldn’t do it, all we are saying is have a CRNA or anesthesiologist present. Because you as an oral surgeon or anybody in the field cannot be paying attention to what you are doing, important work inside a patient’s mouth, and monitoring the numbers, and looking out for vital signs.”
The Quality of Sedation Training, Education, and Experience Matter!
If you are considering IV sedation for a dental procedure for yourself, child, or loved one, it is important to know all the facts.
With safety in mind, experts recommend having a nurse anesthetist perform the sedation, while the dentist performs the dental procedure. “Many medical experts say it’s unsafe for dentists to administer anesthesia in kids while also doing dental work.” NBC.
