As an adult, we understand going to the dentist is a necessity, even if we don’t want to, but for children it is a different story. They don’t always understand why they have to go to the dentist, all the lights and sounds can be very scary, the chair is uncomfortable, they don’t like someone poking around in their mouth, and it just hurts!
All this can make a child fearful, anxious, and fussy. Which can make it very difficult for a dentist to perform the treatment. Which is why IV sedation can make everything go smoothly and your child won’t have to deal with any anxiety or be traumatized.
What is IV sedation?
Intravenous (IV) sedation is when medication is continuously and slowly being delivered to the patient through a vein in the hand or arm. The sedation can be adjusted throughout the procedure, to ensure safety. A certified third party will monitor the patient’s breathing and vital signs.
What does dental IV sedation feel Like?
Your child will feel very relaxed and sleepy. While they are not unconscious, they may feel like they are sleeping. They will be able to answer any questions when prompted.
Their discomfort and movement is greatly reduced. This way the dentist is able to perform several treatments at one time, without worrying if the child will move or uncomfortable.
The child will be less aware of their surroundings and the dental procedure itself. They won’t be traumatized by the treatment.
Their memory of the appointment will be mostly suppressed, they probably won’t remember anything they went on during the appointment.
They also won’t feel much pain, if any, during or after the procedure
