I don’t know many people who look forward to going to the dentist. Which is why over 20 percent of Americans avoid going to the dentist because of anxiety and fear, according to the American Dental Association.

Unfortunately, putting off going to the dentist can lead to serious issues, from root canals, tooth loss, infections, and oral cancer. Fortunately, today dentist’s are using techniques, such IV sedation to help patients of all ages to get the dental care they need without experiencing pain or anxiety.

What is IV sedation

IV sedation is an anti-anxiety medication that is administered through intravenously into a vein before and during your dental procedure. It is often referred to as a twilight state. You are not asleep, but rather in a very relaxed and peaceful state. You will be able to answer any questions the dentist may ask, but you won’t remember much, if any of the treatment. You also won’t feel any pain, anxiety, or have trouble sitting still in the chair.

How does IV sedation work?

A very thin needle is placed in a vein in your arm or hand, which delivers medication based on your specific needs, into your bloodstream.

If you are anxious and unable to have the IV placed without some form of sedation, we may have you breath oxygen mixed with a relaxing gas called nitrous oxide.

During your procedure we give you medication through the IV to help decrease pain, inflammation, and nausea for approximately four or more hours after you leave the office. Your vitals will be closely monitored the entire time. Including your blood pressure, oxidant levels, and pulse.

Upon waking from your relaxed dreamlike state you will have no recollection of your dental procedure and minimal to no discomfort.

Is IV sedation right for you?

IV sedation has helped many people, especially those with special needs, autism, unable to sit still for a long period of time, Parkinson’s disease, cerebral palsy, or a number of other conditions, will ensure they receive safe oral health care.

Not everyone is a good candidate for IV sedation, these include respiratory disease, kidney or liver disease, adrenal or thyroid disorders, and a few others. This is why it is important to talk to a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists. Discuss your medical history and medications you may be taking, to ensure a safe and effective plan.
