Every parent feels for their children who are in dental pain or have an oral infection. Dental procedures typically require a child to remain completely still while they work. The procedures may be complex or in need of multiple treatments, the sound of the drill, smells, and environment of the dental office can be extremely scary for a child.

The goal is to provide your child with the safest and pain free dental appointment as possible.

According to Healthy Children, “the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) updated the current guidelines for dentists and oral surgeons to follow when providing deep sedation or general anesthesia to children.”

“It requires that there are always at least 2 people in the room who are trained to provide advanced life support measures in case there are any problems. One of these people will be the dentist or oral surgeon performing the procedure and the other will be an independent observer. This independent observer must be “a physician anesthesiologist, a certified registered nurse anesthetist, a second oral surgeon, or a dentist anesthesiologist.”

IV sedation relaxes your child so they feel at ease and comfortable.

They won’t have trouble sitting in the dental chair, even for lengthy procedures. While they will be able to respond to the dentist, they will have little if any recollection of the dental visit.

Children with a sensitive gag reflex, have difficulty keeping their mouth open for the length of the procedure, trouble sitting still, or have special needs, can make receiving dental treatments difficult. IV sedation is a great option for a child to receive quality dental care without compromising their level of comfort or negative memories associated with the dentist.

How safe is IV sedation for my child

IV sedation has improved significantly over the years. For the safest route, Blue Sky Solutions has an experienced Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) to tailor the proper amount of medication to your child. To ensure safety, your Childs vitals will be closely monitored by the nurse while the dentist performs the procedure, blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, and blood oxygen level.

“IV sedation, also known as conscious sedation, is a sort of middle ground and it doesn’t fully put you to sleep. It does make you less aware of what is going on around you during your procedure or treatment,” Colgate.

At Blue Sky Anesthesia Associates, we do everything to make your child’s visit to the dentist a positive experience. Our experience is geared toward the unique emotional and physical needs of the patient.
