The recent tragic complications during dentist procedures has brought awareness to the risks associated with anesthesia. The Lewis family is still looking for answers after their 6 year old child died from possibly associated with improper anesthesia.
It is alleged that the dental providers failed to properly monitor the child’s condition during and after anesthesia. The lawsuit claims the dental team failed to monitor the child’s vital signs, oxygen saturation levels, cardiac and respiratory condition. The child suffered from obstructed and/or inadequate airway. Failing to adequately respond to the child’s condition in a timely manner is thought to have led to his death.
Unfortunately, tragic complications involving anesthesia during dental procedures are a real issue. Typically, occurring when anesthesia is administered by a dentist who has received some training, instead of a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.
This is because the dentist is concentrating on doing the procedure and doesn’t recognize there is an issue with their airway, until it’s to late.
“The single operator anesthesia model is accepted nowhere in medicine, but exists only in dentistry,” Paula Whiteman, representing the American Academy of Pediatrics of California.
