Over the last decade, IV sedation has become commonly used in dentistry, for both adults and children. The dentist office presents a variety of challenges, that can make going almost impossible. It could be the sound of the drill, constant suction, continuous vibration, and anesthesia injections, that causes severe anxiety. Which is why IV sedation dentistry has become so popular.
This anxiety and fear associated with dental treatments often results in significant distress and avoidance. This type of stimuli can cause disruptive behaviors and full-blown tantrums in children.
Research has shown intravenous (IV) administration is optimal method for the swiftest way for medication to take into effect and titrating medication.
According to an article in the Frontiers in Medicine, The safety of the patient should always be the top priority. Several organizations, such as the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), lay out safety guidelines to ensure safety of the patient.
To guard the patient’s safety and welfare;
To minimize physical discomfort and pain;
Control anxiety, minimize psychological trauma, and maximize the potential for amnesia;
To modify behavior and/or movement to allow the safe completion of the procedure;
To return the patient to a state in which discharge from medical/dental supervision is safe, as determined by recognized criterial
To ensure safety is the top priority, it is critical to have a a certified third party to continuously monitor the patient during and after the procedure. Appropriate airway management and respiratory monitoring is paramount during dental IV sedation.
While monitoring equipment is essential, there is no single piece of equipment that can replace the role of a capable and vigilant sedation provider who is responsible for monitoring the patient during the sedation procedure.
