General anesthesia, novocaine, and conscious IV sedation are different types of sedation used by dentist in New Hampshire, ….. depending on the needs of the patient and the procedure. If you or a loved one dreads going to the dentist, feel anxiety, have a phobia, extreme sensitivity, disability, special needs or a severe gag reflex, IV sedation can be very beneficial.
What is the difference between general anesthesia, novocaine, and conscious IV sedation?
Many of us have experienced the painful shot in your mouth when the dentist administers novocaine. Many people feel a burning sensation during the injection. It is used to numb the part of the mouth the dentist will be working on. It typically lasts from 30 to 60 minutes. It usually causes a numbness or tingling sensation. You will be fully awake, noticing all the sounds and sights.
During general anesthesia the patient is completely unconscious. Typically reserved for very invasive oral surgery. The patient won’t feel anything or know what is going on, and there is a longer recovery time.
Conscious IV sedation is the best of both worlds. While not completely unconscious, you won’t remember much, if anything about the appointment. IV sedation quickly takes effect and the medication can be adjusted as needed. This reduces both the side effects and risk of complications. While under IV sedation patients feel relaxed, calm, and even sleepy. Patients are still able to communicate and answer any questions the dentist may ask in this semi-awake state.
This form of sedation is often recommended for those you have anxiety or apprehensive about going to the dentist. While you will need to go over your medical history during your one-on-one conversation with your CRNA. This will allow them to get to know you and your concerns allowing them to determine the best-tailored sedation plan for you
What About Safety?
When it comes to safety, IV sedation is the way to go. It allows you to avoid the risk of complications that comes with general anesthesia. While under general anesthesia, certain health conditions can also increase the risk of complications. Such as allergies to drugs, diabetes, obesity, smoking, sleep apnea, and seizure disorders.
