Are you one of the millions of people who have dental anxiety, have overly sensitive teeth, or have a loved one who have a difficult time sitting still in the dental chair for an extended period of time? Then IV dental sedation may be for you!
Want a stress free dental appointment? Here is what you can expect during your dental appointment with IV sedation.
Undergoing sedation
A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), will place an IV in your hand or arm. Then the CRNA will put medication through the IV that goes into the bloodstream.
The quick act medication will put you in a very relaxed, semi-awake state. This IV sedation is not like when you undergo major surgery and are completely unconscious. Instead, you will be able to respond to the dentist’s questions and breathe on your own, but you won’t be aware of the procedures taking place.
Adjusting the sedation
Even before the medication takes into effect, all your vitals and breathing will be monitored by the CRNA. This way the dentist will be able to give his full attention to the procedure. The CRNA is able to adjust the sedation medication accordingly, whether you need more or less. Don’t worry, you won’t even realize the adjustments are being made.
Coming out of sedation
The magic of IV sedation is that it feels like time speeds up. Once the treatments are over, the CRNA will stop the medication and rouse you from the sedative state. You won’t believe that it is over so quick, it will feel like you were under for just a few minutes, when in reality it has been a couple of hours. This is why the dentist typically completes several procedures at one appointment.
Going home after the appointment
After the procedure you may feel a little drowsy. So, you won’t be able to drive home yourself, you will need a driver. You should take it easy for about 24 hours after you get home.
