Mouth Healthy and the Blue Sky Anesthesia Associates have teamed up for National Children’s Dental Health Month. When it comes to your child’s oral health, we know it isn’t always easy. All the sounds, sights, and instruments in their tiny, little mouths is not easy on children. In fact, it can be pretty scary. Which is why some dentist recommend sedation for some dental procedures.
In last week’s blog we went over some questions a parent or caregiver should ask their dentist or anesthesia provider about their child’s procure. Here are more questions the American Dental Association suggests you ask about the process during and after the procedure.
During the procedure:
In addition to local anesthesia (numbing), what level of sedation or general anesthesia will my child be given? Is it minimal sedation (relaxed and awake), moderate sedation (sleepy but awake), deep sedation (barely awake) or general anesthesia (unconscious)?
How will my child be monitored before, during and after the procedure until the child is released to go home? Will there be at least two people with the proper training and credentials present during my child’s procedure? Are the appropriate emergency medications and equipment immediately available if needed, and does the office have a written emergency response plan for managing medical emergencies?
After the procedure:
Will the sedation/anesthesia provider give me instructions and emergency contact information if there are any concerns or complications after returning home?

Sedation dentistry is also called conscious sedation density or IV sedation dentistry. This intravenous nature means you will be fully relaxed throughout your dental treatment. Patients will have little to any memory of the procedures or the pain and discomfort.
