If you have a child who is afraid of going to the dentist, but you have concerns about IV sedation, it is understandable. Especially, after the questions that have been raised in the last couple of years about pediatric dentistry and the safety of IV sedation. This includes media reports of complications in some cases. As a parent, there are a few important aspects to keep in mind

IV sedation dentistry is very safe for pediatric patients when administered by an experienced, qualified, and highly trained, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA).

If your child is scared or anxious about their dental appointment, has a disability or special needs, IV sedation has been proven to be very safe and effective way for them to get the oral health care they need.

A child who is fidgety and anxious in the dental chair can make things very difficult for the dentist, patient, and parent. This can lead to a child being even more fearful of the dentist, and resist getting oral health care they need in the future.

IV sedation is quick to take effect. The anesthesiologist will carefully administer the anti-anxiety medication through a vein in the hand or arm of the child. It will quickly put your child at ease and take away all the fear and anxiety.

The dosage is based on the specific patient. It is safe because the dosage can be easily titrated to achieve the desired level of sedation.

Other benefits of IV sedation include your child having very little if any recollection of the treatment. This means they won’t have any negative memories to worsen their fears of the dentist, making them resistant to appointments in the future.

To ensure your child is comfortable during the entire procedure, a CRNA will continuously monitor and adjust the medication. As well as, monitor all their vital signs and breathing. The medication is short acting, so you child will wake shortly after the treatment is over. In case there is a complication, the medication can be reversed right away
