When administered correctly, IV sedation for dentistry is very safe and effective for both adults and children. Proper training, qualifications, and certification are essential, as well as following protocol.
While some dentist get some training and perform both the dental procedure and sedation, known as the ‘single operator’ model, has come under fire from many agencies.
This troublesome scenario has had disastrous results. In a hospital based setting all the proper requirements must be fulfilled by someone who is either a physician, nurse or midlevel provider.
“The situation in some dental offices is worrisome given the considerable state-to-state variability in anesthesia requirements in the dental setting. Most states allow a “single-operator” model in which a dentist holding a state-issued anesthesia permit may administer sedatives/anesthetics and perform the dental procedure. Often, the person monitoring the patient under sedation is a dental assistant whose training varies from state to state and who may have no more than a high school diploma and a certificate course.” American Academy of Pediatrics.
This is why so many dental offices are turning to Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). Someone who is qualified/certified to administer the sedation and monitor vital signs during the procedure.
Unlike other methods of sedation that administer a set amount of medication all at one time, IV sedation allows a slow titration. This allows the CRNA to monitor how much medication is needed and stop it at any given time.
