More and more dentists are recommending IV sedation for children who need dental procedures. While sedation is safe for children, it is important for parents and caregivers do their homework and understand the process.

Is your dentist following the industry best practices?  Before the appointment, make sure you ask these questions.

What type of sedation will be administered?

There are several types of sedation, nitrous oxide, oral sedation with liquid medication, or IV sedation. Either one you choose, make sure you know the benefits and side effects.

Will a dedicated Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist be with your child throughout the procedure?

If your child is having IV sedation, will your dental office adhere to the two-provide model? This is where a dentist anesthesiologists will provide your child with anesthesia and the dentist focuses only on your child’s procedure.

“When intravenous sedation is necessary for your child, the safest technique is to have a pediatric dentist providing the dentistry while a dentist anesthesiologist focuses on your child,” explained Dr. Raquel Rozdolski, a dentist anesthesiologist at Touro College of Dental Medicine.  “It’s important to remember that children are not miniature adults. Parents should feel comfortable asking about the credentials and level of training of the provider who is sedating their child.”

The CRNA will stay with your child through the appointment and after, while your child is recovering. Monitoring all their vital signs and breathing, recommended by the American Society of Anesthesiologists. Their sole focus will be your child’s well-being. They are also there if you have any questions or concerns after the procedure.

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, “not all anesthesia providers have equal training and experience delivering care during procedures performed within and around the oral cavity, especially in the pediatric or special healthcare needs patient populations or on a mobile basis.”
