How can a CRNA help you get through your next dental visit? With an anxiety and pain free appointment! The latest research has shown a significant link between oral health and overall well being.

The Oral Health Foundation list general health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, strokes, respiratory (lung) disease, and premature or low birth weight babies, all associated with poor oral health.

How can your heart be affected by something going on in your mouth?

When people have gum disease, it is thought that bacteria from the mouth can get into their bloodstream.  The bacteria produce protein.  This can then affect the heart by causing the platelets in the blood to stick together in the blood vessels of the heart.  This can make clots more likely to form.  Blood clots can reduce normal blood flow, so that the heart does not get all the nutrients and oxygen it needs

The connection between strokes and gum disease is very similar. Those with gum disease are at a higher risk of stroke.

The same goes with diabetes, those with gum disease are more likely to develop gum disease and have an increased risk for complications.

How are the lungs affected by oral health?

Bacterial chest infections are thought to be caused by breathing in fine droplets from the throat and mouth into the lungs.  This can cause infections, such as pneumonia, or could make an existing condition worse. People with gum disease have more bacteria in their mouths and may therefore be more likely to get chest infections.

Anxiety related to going to the dentist is known to compromise treatment.

Even knowing the possible health risks, it is still difficult (or almost impossible) to go to the dentist. But it doesn’t have to be!
