At one time or another, most children require some type of dental procedure. This typically means they will need to stay completely still, especially if there are multiple treatments. Lets face it, the sound of the drill, smells of the dental office, and sights of all those tools, is frightening even for adults.
As a parent, you want the safest and pain free dentist appointment possible.
There are several options when it comes to sedation during a dental procedure.
Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, a child typically remembers everything that went on during the appointment. This is the least invasive types of sedation.
Nitrous oxide is great for an apprehensive child having a check up or having their teeth cleaned, but if they are having an in-depth procedure or many treatments done at one time, a deep or IV sedation may be required.
A popular option for more extensive dental procedures is IV sedation
A deep sedation is explained by HealthyChildren.org, “This involves intravenous (IV) medications to help your child sleep through the procedure. While your child may still move a little and sometimes make noises, he or she may not be able to breathe well on his or her own. There should always be at least one additional qualified professional who can monitor your child’s heart rate, heart rhythm, blood pressure, oxygen saturation (breathing) during the procedure and until he or she wakes up. This professional can also determine when your child is ready to go home.”
A positive dental experience is important
It is vital for children have proper dental care for a healthy teeth and gums, it is equally important they don’t feel severe anxiety or fear while they are having a dental procedure.
A proactive approach to a lifetime of good dental health care is developing positive childhood memories. If a child is excessively worried or fearful of going to the dentist, over time these feelings can worsen, resulting avoiding the dentist all together as an adult.
