If your New Hampshire dentist recommends your child or family member with special needs or a disability is in need of dental work, it can be frightening for them. To make things easier, they may need IV sedation to help them relax and not even remember the appointment.

Advances in medicine have made sedation safer than ever, though treatment is never routine. Which is why it is important to take appropriate precautions, such as having an experienced Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), at your dental office to administer the sedation. One thing to know, adult and pediatric IV sedation are not the same.

When administering any type of sedation, there are many variables that make adult and pediatric different. For instance, the age, size, and emotional  state of the patient make a big difference.

A 35 pound fearless girl, who isn’t scared of a needle, will have vastly different sedation needs than a 100 pound teenager, who is deathly afraid of needles and the dental work they need.

The size of their airways are very different, also the type and length of the procedure is taken into account. Along with the patients overall medical history, medications they may be taking, allergies, and any previous reaction to sedation.

The presence of a CRNA at your dental office to administer the sedation ensures a higher safety level. While under IV sedation the patient is unaware of their surroundings, won’t remember the procedure, but will be able to respond to commands. A CRNA will monitor the patients breathing, heart rate, and can change the medication if needed. While the dentist performs the treatment.

So, if your child feels anxiety about going to the dentist, nervous or even scared, it may be best to help them feel safe and comfortable.

Children who receive good oral health and feel comfortable going to the dentist when they are young, typically have a lifetime of good oral health. Which recent studies show is linked to overall health.
