For many of us dental anxiety and stress is very real. Causing patients, like me, to avoid making it to that dental appointment altogether. Unfortunately, this is how I ended up with serious oral health issues. That’s when I turned to IV sedation, it allowed me to relax during the entire appointment.
With the right sedation, Going to the dentist doesn’t have to be daunting or nerve wracking.
While there are different options when it comes to dental sedation, intravenous is typically the best for alleviating extreme anxiety and inducting relaxation. Because the medication is administered through a vein (usually in the hand) directly into the bloodstream. This allows the Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists to quickly adjust the medication at any time during the treatment. Whether to decrease or increase the dosage.
Good Candidates for Dental Sedation
There are numerous reasons why someone chooses to have IV sedation during dental treatments.
Previous traumatic dental experiences
Difficult either getting numb or staying numb
Afraid of needles or overall anxiety of going to the dentist
The need for extensive or multiple procedures
If you, like myself, avoided the dentist for too long and now need extensive or several treatments. IV sedation allows the dentist to perform many procedures in one appointment. These means you won’t have the added stress of going back for several appointments. Which can be both emotionally and physically taxing. Instead, you can get everything you need to get done with ease and comfort.
Those with certain health can benefit from IV sedation
Those with special needs, autism, unable to sit still for a long period of time, Parkinson’s disease, cerebral palsy, or a number of other conditions, will ensure they receive safe oral health care.
Those who may not be a good candidate for IV sedation
Not everyone is a good candidate for IV sedation, these include respiratory disease, kidney or liver disease, adrenal or thyroid disorders, and a few others. This is why it is important to talk to a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists. Discuss your medical history and medications you may be taking, to ensure a safe and effective plan.
