Dental anxiety is a serious issue. It can prevent you from getting the proper care of your teeth and gums. According to the American Dental Association, almost 22% of American avoid the dentist because of fear or anxiety.
With the advancement of technology, modern dentistry ensures patients are relaxed and comfortable as possible during treatment. A common way anxiety and pain is alleviated is with IV sedation.
What is IV sedation?
Intravenous (IV) sedation is when medication is administered through an IV placed in a vein (typically in the back of the hand). During dental work it is a type of conscious sedation, that makes you puts you at ease, less aware of your surroundings, and does not put you fully sleep. But you won’t remember of much, if any, of the dental procedure.
Benefits of IV sedation
IV sedation takes effect very quickly
Diminishing any discomfort, pain, or anxiety
Your vitals and medication are monitored by a third party CRNA
When the procedure is over, you won’t remember it
Multiple treatments can take place in one appointment.
This means fewer visits to the dentist
Who can get IV sedation?
After a thorough health evaluation, review of your medication and medical history is performed by an experienced CRNA, we will determine if you are a good candidate for IV sedation. This is typically included:
Those with moderate to high level of dental fear or anxiety
Need several procedures or complex dental work
Have a disability or special needs
Those who have trouble sitting still for a considerable time
Those with a sensitivity to the light, sounds, and equipment at the dentist
What about safety?
When it comes to dental sedation, it is important to have a specially trained and certified nurse anesthetist there in the dental office to bring hospital-level sedation. A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist CRNA, will have proper training, experience monitoring all the vital signs, fully up-to-date on all related safety protocols and established emergency procedures, this will allow the dentist to focus all his/her attention on the patient.
