IV sedation, known as Intravenous sedation, is frequently used for orthopedic and plastic surgery, as well as dentistry and oral surgery. A combination of relaxation and pain blocking medication, with a quick recovery time. It is a safe option for those with special needs, circulatory disorders, heart disease, anxiety, and for a gag reflex

Benefits of IV Sedation for Dentistry Include

IV sedation quickly eliminates any anxiety and allows the patient to relax because it is administered directly into the blood stream. Which makes it an excellent option for children and those with special needs.

IV sedation ensures the patient won’t feel any pain, but all their other body functions remain intact. The difference between general anesthesia and IV sedation is you will not be completely unconscious with IV sedation, you will be able to respond to the doctor and breathe on your own.

Even though the patient is still conscious, they will not feel any anxiety. There are very few side effects, slight grogginess that  wears off very quickly.  Though you should bring someone to drive you home afterwards.

There are significantly less side effects with IV sedation, when compared to general anesthesia. The medication is also tailored to suit each individual patient.

In contrast to other forms of anesthesia, there is a lower chance of nausea and blood clots with IV sedation.

While some dentist are known to perform IV sedation and the dental procedure simultaneously, this has proven not to be the safest application. The addition of a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, CRNA, in the dental office whose sole responsibility it is to administer the IV sedation and monitor the patient’s vital signs ensures the highest level of safety.

The patient is able to have several procedures in one appointment. IV sedation allows you to catch up on years of missed dental appointments.
