More and more people are taking advantage of sedation dentistry. It is helping both children and adults get the oral health care they need. Especially, those who are afraid or have anxiety about going to the dentist.
Which form of sedation is best for you? There are a few differences between oral and IV sedation.
Oral sedation
The sedative drugs in oral sedation take some time to take effect. They tend to be less predictable, different medications affect people in different ways. Some people require more, while others need less. But you won’t know how it affects you until the medication eventually sets in. Oral sedation medication also stays in your system for a longer period of time than IV sedation.
IV sedation
IV sedation is more predictable and can achieve a deeper level of sedation in a shorter amount of time because of the intravenous nature. The Medication can also be adjusted according to the patient’s needs. This also makes it a safer choice, since the sedation can be quickly reversed if needed.
Because safety is a priority, to administer IV sedation requires additional training and licensing. A dental anesthesiologist, a third party with proper education and equipment, present to administer the medication, will be with the patient the entire time, before, during, and after the procedure.
