It can be overwhelming to have dental work done, whether it is for you, a child, or loved one with special needs. IV sedation can help you get the dental work you need without all the anxiety or pain. While there IV sedation is safe, there are a few instructions to follow.
Before Your Dental Appointment
Contact Blue Sky Solutions to go over all the information. The patient’s medical history and any medications they are taking, to ensure you are a good candidate for IV sedation.
Wear comfortable clothing to the appointment, it may be a little cooler in the office. Make sure you check with the Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist before taking medication before the procedure. Don’t eat or drink for a minimum of 8 hours before the appointment. Make sure someone comes with you to drive you home.
Adults
Once you are relaxed and your IV is placed, you will be given medication through the IV that will place you in a restful dream-like state of sleep. During your procedure we give you medication through the IV to help decrease pain, inflammation, and nausea for approximately four or more hours after you leave the office. Upon waking from your relaxed dream-like state you will have no recollection of your dental procedure and minimal to no discomfort.
Within 30 to 60 minutes after waking you will be safe to go home with another adult and you will be provided with written discharge instructions from your nurse anesthesiologist.
Children
Most children are given an injection of medications based on their weight to start their sedation. This combination of medications prevents your child from recalling the dental procedure and most of the time the injection as well. We encourage the parents to be present during this part of the sedation, and to hug your child keeping them calm and feeling safe. Within 3-5 minutes your child will become drowsy, then they will be comfortably placed in the dental chair and all of the very same monitors used in the hospital will be applied, monitoring every breath and heartbeat throughout the entire procedure.
After the Appointment
The patient may feel drowsy after the procedure, which is why they will need someone to drive home. Where they should relax, it is recommended not to operate any heavy machinery or drive for 24 hours. Your CRNA from Blue Sky Solutions will follow up with a phone call to answer any questions and to follow up on the patient.
