Many of us have severe anxiety when it comes to going to the dentist, others may have a child who needs several dental procedures, or taking care of someone with disabilities which can make getting necessary oral health care very difficult. There are several types of sedation available in most dental offices, but most of them just don’t do the trick when it comes to issues like these.
Depending on the dental procedure needed, such as pediatric dentistry, root canals, or implants, and the number of treatments required, many dentists are recommending IV sedation with a certified nurse anesthetist.
Options for Levels of Sedation
Nitrous Oxide
Also known as ‘laughing gas’, is a very mild sedation inhaled through the nose. It promotes an overall sense of well being, and has been known to lower mild anxiety, it is very short lasting and does not replace the need for numbing.
Oral Anxiolytic
A pill taken orally, typically Valium, also known as Diazepam, is used for minimal sedation. Can ease and relax some patients, it dulls the senses and alters perception. Not everyone reacts the same to this type of medication and you will need a driver to transport you home from the appointment. Midazolam is usually used for pediatric dentistry, though little information is available as to its safety in children.
IV Sedation
Intravenous sedation is a moderate sedation, used for both adults and children. A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), administers medication directly into the bloodstream of the patient. The level of sedation is specifically tailored to the patient by the CRNA and can be adjusted at any time. They also monitor all the vital signs and breathing, while the dentist concentrates solely on the procedures. This is a preferred choice for those with extreme anxiety because the patient typically does not remember the appointment and feel as though they slept right the entire procedure. Patients will need a driver to transport them back home.
