I don’t know anyone who looks forward to a dental appointment. In fact, I know many people who avoid going to the dentist because of anxiety and fear. They put it off until the pain is just too much. This can lead to dental infections, tooth loss, and even oral cancer.

Luckily, dentist understands their patient’s apprehension and have turned to sedation techniques to help them get the oral health care they need.

What is IV sedation dentistry?

Intravenous (IV) sedation dentistry is when anti-anxiety drugs is administered through your blood stream through a very small needle during your dental procedure. The sedative helps you feel at peace and very relaxed. While it does not put you to sleep, some people feel like they were asleep. They don’t remember the appointment, but they are able to answer any question the dentist ask. Most patients are very vague of the treatment once th sedative wears off.

How does IV Sedation Work?

A third party Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) will place the thin needle into a vein in your arm or hand. The sedative is delivered into the bloodstream through an intravenous tube that is connected to the needle. The CRNA will monitor all the vitals signs, oxygen levels and pulse. They can also change the dosage of the medicine at any time during the treatment. Since you will probably feel groggy after the appointment, you will need a friend or family member driver you home.

Benefits of IV Sedation Dentistry

Because IV sedation does not have an impact on the body processes, but only prevents the patient’s ability to feel pain. You will be able to move and breathe on your own.

IV sedation allows the dentist to perform several procedures in just one visit. This means you won’t need so many visits, cottoned down on the cost of your dental work.
