Dental sedation isn’t just for those procedures that are painful. It can help anyone who has had a negative past experience while sitting in a dental chair. At Blue Sky Anesthesia Associates safety and comfort are our top priority. We have a lot of patients come to us with questions about IV sedation in a dental practice setting.
Can you tell me about yourself, your education and expereince?
Dr. Dwayne Thibeault DNP, CRNA, ARNP, is a Nurse Anesthesiologist licensed to practice in New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine and Massachusettes. My experience and qualifications include 20+ years in trauma/critical care settings caring for patients of all ages and backgrounds ranging from office based procedures, to emergency trauma patients, to open heart and lung surgeries. My anesthesia training was completed at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, culminating in a Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP).
My undergraduate degree of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing was completed at Florida State University in Tallahassee.
Shortly after completing my undergraduate degree, I also obtained my Paramedic license and functioned as a Registered Nurse and a Paramedic for several years. During that time I was also an Adjunct Clinical Faculty Member for the Daytona State College Emergency Services Program. I continue my love of teaching today by guest lecturing for the University of North Florida’s Nurse Anesthesiology Program on adult and pediatric anesthesia airway management and at the 2022 Yankee Dental Conference on adult and pediatric dental anesthesia. I am also an active member of the American Association of Nurse Anesthrsiology (AANA) and the current President for the New Hampshire Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (NHANA)
Why is it important to have a CRNA perform the sedation and not the dentist?
Having a CRNA perform your IV sedation allows the dentist to concentrate on the procedure. This will ensure maximum safety when it comes to your sedation. The CRNA will monitor your vital signs and make sure you are receiving the appropriate level of sedation. As a CRNA, I am trained in emergency procedures and advanced airway management.
