For many of us, just the thought of going to the dentist can bring about anxiety and fear. In fact, over 60 percent of adults in America are afraid of going to the dentist. While over 20 percent miss appointments due to the thoughts of pain and fear.
While I don’ know anyone who likes going to the dentist, it is necessary, not only for healthy teeth and gums, but also for our overall health.
Luckily, modern dentistry has made advancement when it comes to those with anxiety. Instead of missing appointments or siting through grueling dental procedures, IV sedation has made it easy for adults and children get the dental work they need.
What is IV dental sedation?
IV sedation allows the patient to feel totally relaxed during the length of the procedure. Administered intravenously, the anti-anxiety medication will place you in a restful dream-like state of sleep. You will still be conscious and able to answer and questions the dentist may ask.
During your procedure you will be given medication through the IV to help decrease pain, inflammation, and nausea for approximately four or more hours after you leave the office.
Upon waking from your relaxed dream-like state you will have no recollection of your dental procedure and minimal to no discomfort.
Who can perform IV dental sedation?
Not all dentists in New Hampshire can perform sedation, it takes specialized education. But even with the additional training, performing both the anesthesia and dental treatment at the same time, this type of single operator model has been proven to be unsafe.
It’s important to have a separate nurse anesthetist, whose sole purpose is to perform the sedation and monitor the patient’s vital signs. They should be experienced and properly trained in providing IV sedation. As well as meeting all the standards of the ADA Guidelines for the Use of Sedation and General Anesthesia by Dentists. This is why so many dental offices are turning to Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). Someone who is qualified/certified to administer the sedation and monitor vital signs during the procedure.
Unlike other methods of sedation that administer a set amount of medication all at one time, IV sedation allows a slow titration. This allows the CRNA to monitor how much medication is needed and stop it at any given time.
Blue Sky Solutions Group follows the strict American Dental Association guidelines and protocols throughout the procedure. Prior to your appointment, a CRNA will work closely with you to determine the best course of treatment and answer any questions.
