Not looking forward to your next dental visit? Have you given much thought about the anesthesia you are going to have? Anesthetics have come a long way in the last few decades, helping dental patients alleviating anxiety for a pain free appointment.

When it comes to dental anesthesia, there are a few choices

Local Anesthesia

Local anesthesia, typically the painful shot in the gum when you are having a simple procedure. While it does numb the area, you can still feel much of what is going on, the pain is just significantly reduced. You will be able to communicate with the dentist, hear the drill and other interments, as well as all the sights and smells.

Local anesthesia takes about 10 minutes to take effect and last approximately 30 to 60 minutes. Many people don’t find this type of sedation enough for more in-depth procedures.

IV Sedation

Many people are opting for IV sedation for longer treatments, especially if they have anxiety or special needs, making it difficult to sit in a chair for an extended period of time.

The medication in this type of sedation relaxes the muscles. The patient won’t feel any pain, but will be conscious and able to answer any questions the dentist may ask. It also has an amnesia effect, so you won’t remember much, if any of the appointment.

If you’re not looking forward to your next dental appointment, then IV sedation may be able to help

When it comes to dental sedation like this, it is important to have a specially trained and certified nurse anesthetist there in the dental office to bring hospital-level sedation.

A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist CRNA, will have proper training, experience monitoring all the vital signs, fully up-to-date on all related safety protocols and established emergency procedures, this will allow the dentist to focus all his/her attention on your child.
