IV sedation has become a game changer when it comes to children getting dental treatments. Less stress and fewer visits, what’s not to like, then why is it not more widely used?

Sedation for medical purposes is commonly used, but for dental work it hasn’t attained the same degree of popularity. Why? The easy answer, a medical student is taught to use parenteral and oral sedation. But in dental student is taught to use nitrous oxide.

A dentist would have to attend a specialty program that specifically teaches IV sedation, which can take years. Instead, they continue with their specialization, whether that is general, pediatric, Endodontists, and Prosthodontists, and begin their practice.

You probably wouldn’t even think of having a medical procedure without intravenous sedation. While you or your loved one forgo’s dental treatment because of fear.

Intravenous sedation was limited to those with were medically compromised, conditions that required hospital resources or physically or mentally challenged. With skyrocketing hospital cost, this can get pretty expensive. In the last decade, both adults and children have seen the benefits of IV sedation in the dental office.

When it comes to pediatric patients or those with special needs, going to the dentist for just a cleaning can be a nightmare. The stress on the child and parent can be too much. This becomes even worse when multiple appointments are necessary.

Sedation medication orally administered for children can take over an hour to take effect and some have adverse side effects. IV sedation is fast acting and takes a short time to eliminate. There is very little memory of the appointment, so you won’t have to worry about traumatization.
