For those of us who avoid going to the dentist or have children who need extensive dental work or can’t sit still for an extended period of time, a loved one with a disability or special needs, IV sedation for dental work can be a game changer.
IV sedation allows patients to relax, not feel any pain, reduce any anxiety, and they won’t even remember much of the appointment.
A question we get here at Blue Sky Anesthesia Associates, What is the difference between IV sedation dentistry and general anesthesia? Here is a look at how they work and which one may be best for your situation.
IV Sedation
The medication involved in IV sedation is administered through a vein, which means it takes effect very quickly. Which means there won’t be any waiting around while the anxiety just gets worse. The medication is also easily adjusted by a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthesiologist (CRNA). The risk of complications is reduced, as well as the side effects.
What Will IV Sedation Feel Like?
IV sedation makes you feel very relaxed, calm, and even sleepy. Typically, it is a semi-awake state, but you will be able to any any questions the dentist asks and communicate. When the procedure is over, most patients don’t remember any of the appointment.
General Anesthesia
In general anesthesia, the patient is completely unconscious through a combination of intravenous medication and inhaled gasses. The patient will not be able to feel anything or respond to any questions.
Check back with us next week when we discuss when IV sedation and general anesthesia should both be used and which one is safer. Until then, if you have any questions about sedation during dental procedures, contact Blue Sky Anesthesia Associates.
