Dental sedation will definitely be a hot topic for 2019. Efforts to reduce the number of pediatric disasters in the dental chair are in full force. The evolution of the guidelines concerning our children and IV sedation outside the hospital setting will hopefully reduce the number of tragedies

In a dental setting, anesthesia requirements carry from state to state. Many states such as New Hampshire allow for a ‘single operator’ model, where the dentist performs the procedure and the anesthesia at the same time. Which has lead to troubling situations in many cases.

The American Academy of Pediatrics, Dedicated to the Health of All Children, writes;

“One issue identified repeatedly as problematic is appropriate training and staffing during procedures where deep sedation and/or general anesthesia is the therapeutic goal. The practice model endorsed by the Academy and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) for deeply sedated children (i.e., no purposeful interaction) is one in which a specific person has dedicated responsibility “to constantly observe the patient’s vital signs, airway patency, and adequacy of ventilation and to either administer drugs or direct their administration and at a minimum be trained in PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) and capable of assisting with any emergency event” (Guidelines for Monitoring and Management of Pediatric Patients Before, During, and After Sedation for Diagnostic and Therapeutic Procedures.”

The efforts to change legislation from the ‘single operator’ to having a qualified and licensed provider, such as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist administering the sedation is vital.

When it comes to sedation of your child, it is important to have a specially trained and certified nurse anesthetist there in the dental office to bring hospital-level sedation. A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist CRNA, will have proper training, experience monitoring all the vital signs, fully up-to-date on all related safety protocols and established emergency procedures, this will allow the dentist to focus all his/her attention on your child.
